IP Europe welcomes the publication of the outcome of the UK IPO Call for Views on Standard Essential Patents and Innovation
BRUSSELS – On 5 August 2022, the UK Intellectual Property Office published a Summary of the Responses to the Call for Views on Standard Essential Patents and Innovation. IP Europe welcomed the opportunity to contribute to the consultation earlier this year.
We are particularly pleased that the IPO included the need for a balanced licensing ecosystem, which we advocated for together with multiple other stakeholders. A balanced SEP framework should include protection of IP rights, which fuel the ability for research intensive companies to contribute to vital technologies like 5G while at the same time ensuring that other companies can access those technologies. This will incentivise firms in Britain to invest in R&D and contribute the resultant technology to open standards, improving British industry’s creativity and innovation and ultimately benefiting consumers.
We thank the IPO for taking our views and the evidence we provided into account. An evidence-based approach to policy making will ensure that any real problems are addressed, and that industry is not needlessly disrupted. We look forward to continuing a constructive dialogue on these important issues for industry.
